Ah, Fortnite, the game that had completely swept the nation in a matter of months. If you haven’t heard of it, which is unlikely, Fortnite is unlike any other war game. You are sent to fight to the death against all other players, with the ability to build to better your advantage.
If you have played Fortnite, you know how addicting the game is to play. If you haven’t, you either know someone that has or you’ve heard of it before.
The game was released in July 2017 and has grown widely since, captivating people from the beginning. But how has it actually affected society as a whole?
Most girlfriends, this isn’t a stereotype, will say how the game affected their relationship negatively. While others say it brought them and their significant others closer. Playing the game with loved ones can both create and break a bond.
But isn’t that all video games?
When it comes to video games, of course, if two people aren’t both involved, it can seem one-sided. For the couples who struggle, if your significant other wants to play, pick up a controller and play with them. Or watch while snuggling close by.
What we’ve really neglected to realize is that any video game can create this kind of commotion, if drawn to the right audience and advertised correctly.
Fortnite isn’t a game with intense graphics. It doesn’t really contain a storyline. The grabbing point of the game is that you’re fighting against everyone for the top.
There have been many other video games before this that have caused an ‘uproar’ if you will. "Call of Duty: Black Ops" was a very high selling, attention-grabbing game for years.
So what is it about Fortnite that has everyone's, even people that don’t play video games, attention?
As video gaming grows, as do most other technologies, including the uses of social media. With social media growing vastly by the second, the information about practically anything can grow widely in seconds. The more people post, tweet, hashtag, whatever about Fortnite, the more it gets talked about.
Fortnite has impacted our society, both in the video gaming world and outside of it. Some will say for better, others for worse. But the decision is ultimately yours to decide.
