Just when you thought the football world was done talking about former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and his issues off the football field, he somehow comes back into discussion. Since Manziel entered the NFL in 2014, he has grabbed news headlines but for all the wrong reasons. He has gotten into trouble on many different occasions for various offenses: driving while under the influence of alcohol, violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and charged with domestic violence accusations. Even Manziel’s father is greatly concerned. In fact, Paul Manziel told USA Today that “He’s a druggie. It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn’t [sought] it yet. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say.…“He has more money than me, so he can outrun me. Like I said, there are two things that are going to happen: He’s either going to die, or he’s going to figure out that he needs help. It’s one of the two. But we’ve done everything that we can do. Life goes on. You can’t just chase somebody that’s not willing to listen. The story is not going to change. It’s the same. … I mean, I hate to say it, but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him.”(2016)
After he got drafted with the 20-second overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel’s troubles began. He was found partying with celebrities. He was supposed to join his fellow Cleveland Brown rookies in minicamp. He knew better than that. He was being immature. But he didn’t stop partying. This partying would eventually lead to him being charged with drunk driving. Manziel has since made every attempt to sober up and change his behavior. The New York Post had this to say on Manziel: “While it’s unclear who or what sort of safety net will catch Manziel should he go off the rails again, the Heisman Trophy winner seemingly has reveled in his free time since being cut by the Cleveland Browns in March after two pro seasons. Between undercover operations in Las Vegas and making it rain in strip clubs, Manziel’s benders have kept us wondering when that next line will be crossed” (2016).
If Manziel keeps up this style of living, he could be dead at a young age. Think about it. Alcohol. Drugs. Wild parties. He is struggling spiritually. While it is unclear that Johnny Manziel is a Christian, he needs a much better solution to his many troubles. That answer is Jesus Christ. Manziel is battling a demon inside his soul and he needs to get his life back in order. And he needs to do it while he has time. He has family and friends that love him. They don’t want to see him disintegrate, along with his career.
