Forget A "Person," Find A Work Mom!

A lot of people have a person but only a few lucky people find a work mom.

Forget A "Person," Find A Work Mom!

Like in the hit show " Grey's Anatomy", a person is someone who is there for you whenever you need them. When you feel like you have no one else, you have them. This term became famous when Christina Yang called Meredith Grey her person in the first season. Ever since I started watching "Grey's Anatomy" during my freshman year of college, I wanted to find someone to be my person. It turns out that I found something much better; I found myself a work mom.

I met her my first summer working at Burger King. Just in that summer she taught me so much in how to keep Burger King running. It wasn't until I got yelled at the first time by a manager that her motherly ways shined through. I was barely holding it together. I hate when I let people down, and she looked at me and said "Don't let one mistake outshine the progress you have made. You're one of the good ones, I can tell or I wouldn't have put so much time in teaching you my way of doing things." That alone made me feel so much better.

From that day on she was always one of the only people who could tell if I was upset. She also wouldn't leave me alone until I told her what was wrong.

She was always excited to hear about my school even before I started. On my last day at work before I left for my freshman year at Keystone, she acted as if it were any other day until it came time for me to clock out. I went with a heavy heart to tell her see you later and she stopped and looked at me, tears streaming down her cheeks, hugged me and told me to be good, have fun, and don't forget the little people at Burger King. That was the moment I realized she loved me as one of her own kids.

My first semester at school flew by and whenever anything good happened, I wanted to tell my work mom but I couldn't. When Thanksgiving break came I got to go back to work. When we saw each other and I don't know who screamed louder! I told her about school all that week- my friends, my classes, my awesome SRA, and my extracurriculars. She was so proud when I told her that I was selected to be an officer of a club.

Our friendship expanded more than the mother/daughter aspect. When I needed a best friend she was my best friend, if it was a sister I needed she treated me like a sister. She is my reality check when I need it. If I need to vent she's there to listen. If I wasn't thinking she would tell me to think and that I was a smart girl, that I know better. When I need tough love she willingly dishes it out.

This summer we became even closer! She always has my back and defends me no matter what, just as I do for her. Thanks to her help, my hours were increased because whenever the question of who should go on the schedule came up, she would say why not Jasmine? I became cross trained and at first I was scared because I didn't think I would be good enough. Her response was that if she didn't think I could do it she would have told Tiff no.

The first time I cried at Burger King was when my mom kept calling me and yelling at me. Joan came over and told me it was okay, that my mom was in the wrong and she rubbed my back. That was one of the first times I called her mama. Her family became my family, her kids became like my little brothers and sisters.

Somedays I don't know what I would do without my work mom. I tell her everything from school to very personal stuff about who I have crushes on. Almost all my good memories at Burger King involve her in some way. We jam out to Luke Bryan on the way to my house when life is going good and talk on the phone until we fall asleep when the rough days hit. Knowing that I can talk to her about everything and anything gives me a sense of stability and she helped me find a sense of self confidence that I didn't know I had.

If you're luck enough to find a "person," that's awesome, but if you find a work mom, never let them go!

I love you Mama Joan!!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
