Fordham Odyssey Wants YOU This Semester

Are you looking for a school community to be a part of? Do you have strong opinions and want a platform where you'll be heard? Do you like to write or want more experience writing? Join Fordham Odyssey!

The Odyssey is essentially an online public platform created for and by students. When you apply and become a member of the Fordham branch of Odyssey, you can look forward to a space where you can create original content, share it with a wide community, and explore your voice and style of writing.

Fordham Odyssey is a quickly growing community of student writers and editors who work together to put out new and interesting content every week. Articles range in topic from life advice to current events, to sports and even humor.

Writing for a school publication is a great way to be heard and to get involved on campus. That being said, there are a few perks of writing for the Odyssey that gives it a slight edge.

The best part about writing for Odyssey is the new Core platform, which is where articles are written, submitted, and edited. Everything written for Odyssey is done online, which means you can do it from the comfort of your dorm room, and you don't need to trek to an office building every week to type, edit, or print. This is especially convenient because of Fordham's two different campuses - RH and LC students are all welcome to join.

The new system is also simple to use and makes the writing and formatting process ten times easier than it would be without a program. You don't need to be a journalism major or have experience writing for a publication to understand Core. It takes you through the process of creating an article step by step.

Another great thing about Odyssey is the freedom you have in your choice of topic. There are no assigned topics or stories like some newspapers or magazines have, so you can write about what's important to you and what you feel might be relatable or enjoyable for other students.

I wasn't aware of Odyssey during my freshman year, and I'm not an English or Journalism major, but writing is something I enjoy and a skill that I'm always trying to improve. Without Odyssey, I had nowhere to get that writing fix. The summer before my sophomore year is when I discovered and joined Odyssey and it's one of the best decisions I've made.

Not only do I now have a huge and diverse writing portfolio available, but I also get to write about topics that I feel are important but aren't always addressed. For example, mental health is so important to me and I know that a lot of college students struggle with it. Odyssey has given me a platform to explore different mental health topics and share my own advice and experiences with others who might need that.

Long story short: Odyssey is an amazing and supportive community of student writers who are excited for new members to collaborate and share with. You don't need to be the world's best writer, as long as you enjoy it, and are dedicated to it. Go to our Instagram, @fordham.odyssey, or the Fordham Odyssey homepage to find out more about applying, to see some recent articles of ours, and to get to know the group. We can't wait to hear what you have to say!

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
