It's okay to be in a funk
Start writing a post

Everyone gets in a funk. No one wakes up every day thinking "I hope today's the day I'm in a funk". It's one of the most natural things in the world, but you never know when it's going to happen and sometimes, it's really hard to get out of it. And to be honest, sometimes you don't even realize you're in a funk until you're a few days deep and you're like "wow, I have been acting a little off". The first thing to know: it's okay to feel a little off!

Everybody goes through ups and downs. Sometimes those downs or those off feelings last a little bit longer than a day or two - then you know: you're in a funk. It sucks being in one because you constantly want to pull yourself out of it but sometimes, it's really hard to do. Sometimes things just don't go your way and you try your hardest to turn things around and they just don't. Don't let that completely discourage you from still trying to turn it around. It might take a little bit longer than you were hoping for, but you'll get out of it eventually.

Do something each day that makes you happy. Even if it doesn't make you happy in this exact moment, you know it's something that usually does. It's okay if it doesn't bring you as much joy right now, just do it anyway. It's something you love and just because you're in a mood, doesn't mean you don't love it anymore. I promise that one day, you'll do that one thing, whatever it may be, and you'll feel the joy that it brought you and you'll start to love it again that same way.

Talk to people that you love. It's almost easier to get upset with people that you love because you can show them your true colors and know they'll still love you and forgive you. Talk to them, even if it's not about your funk. Just ask about their day and tell them about your day and if you're feeling up to it, tell them that you're not your happiest - it's okay to admit that. It's okay to admit that you've been a little off lately and that you're not quite feeling like yourself. These are the people that will understand and will actually remind you of who you are. They'll lift you up and show you all of the beautiful things that you may not be noticing at the moment. It'll make you feel better.

It's okay to be in a funk. It's okay to not feel your best and it's okay to work on yourself. The great thing about a funk is that it'll end eventually and you'll see that you appreciate everything around you so much more. Being in a funk sucks, but it's just a funk. It's not who you are - don't let it get the best of you!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
