We carefully open our eyes to meet the sunlight coming through the window, and with a small smile, we greet the day. On some slower mornings, we may spend a few more minutes beneath the warm, soft sheets, but most often the energy is too great to stay still. We turn on the radio and find some good music to really get in the mood for getting the day going. We tell our pets, family, significant others good morning with kisses, hugs, and maybe a small dance session or two. There is a moment of chaos as everyone sleepily rushes to the bathroom, the kitchen, or the closet for whichever process in their morning routine they decide is more important that day. Even as people slowly approach their destinations in the house, there is a bit of humor in everyone's sleepy, hurried steps. The way mornings happen so routinely, every step is done without thought as our experienced hands take care of everything with an automatic deft hand that gets taken for granted all too frequently.
The stove gets hot and ready to work while we scatter ingredients all over the countertop. A mess is nothing this morning while making sure we enjoy the process of making our meal. Butter, coffee, and fresh cut fruit fill the room with an aroma that makes the day feel more real, more certain. We are here, alive, and ready for all the day is going to offer us. The senses start to awaken, our voices less soft, our movement less careless. We start talking about the plans for the day over the clatter of plates and coffee mugs as they move from the cupboard to table to sink in a harmonic round that could only exist in the choir of good mornings. Once breakfast is done, gratitude is given to no one in particular, but it is felt all the same.
For some people, that is all there is to the morning and it is time to leave for work or the first day plans. For others there is still some magic to be experienced. Running gear gets ready and set for miles of active movement amongst the crooked streets and ancient trees. The feeling of wind whipping past each stride is refreshing and new to our once sluggish senses. Our pets get excited for a long walk full of contemplation and exploration of the surrounding neighborhood with its unique scents and unexpected creatures to chase or sniff, if allowed. Once it is finally time for the daily commute, there is just another opportunity to see the morning enchantment of others. Conversations, cars, and footsteps flood the world outside as everyone is now ready to see what the world is ready to give.
