The concept of friendship is a funny thing. You meet a person, you each use syllables and words in such a way that an emotion of happiness is created, and subconsciously you both make a decision that this human is one you'd like to interact with on a frequent basis. Because you enjoy their existence. Spelled out, is that not a little strange.
Sometimes, the concept of a "friend" has been hazy and filled with questions of the genuineness of actions. It's been proven to be a notion of fantasy, much alike to the Prince Charming fairy tales of our younger years. Were we not also spoon-fed images of The Perfect Best Friend
Sometimes, if you're lucky, you will find others who illustrate to you every day what friendship truly is. At first, you might be hesitant, you might evoke feelings from the burned bridges of your past. But these girls are different, they make you feel prioritized, feel important, feel a part of. And you feel the feelings of love requited through the late nights of laughter, tears, broken hearts, and the times you've all drank too much.
Sometimes, you get protective. You want to see them prosper. You sometimes think, am I their best friend or their boyfriend? No man will ever meet the laundry list of criteria and the ever-climbing bar of expectations you have set for those who want to date your friend because...well, no one can. Your future plans begin to include the various vacations, milestones, and memories that will be made. With your future husband? Oh, no--with the girls.
Sometimes, your mind wanders to the time when you will all be scattered around the globe, pursuing dreams, careers, families, and all undoubtedly taking the world by storm. You think about how this group of women has taught you more about compassion and concern for others than any relationship you've ever been in. You might avoid these thoughts because the idea of being apart from your people brings you a world of hurt.
But you know the love you all share is strong enough to withstand graduations, relocations, weddings, and the like. Because as Sex and The City says, "Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with."
