December is such a weird time for college students. It means the end of the semester, marking the end of several miserable weeks and the rewards of the hard work. It’s a happy time for most, filled with tacky sweater date parties and Secret Santa gifts, and the knowledge than only a few exams stand between them and a solid month of family and hometown friends.
However, for others, it is not such a joyful time. I have met several students during my time here who dread this time of year. For some, the stress of finals is just too much to bear. Several college students have to work all through Christmas break just to be able to afford to come back in January. For others, a month of family time means a month of fighting and unnecessary stress on top of school and jobs. For people who have lost loved ones, the holidays just serve as a reminder of the empty chair at dinner time.
Long story short: If you are able to enjoy this time of year, be thankful. Use this time of year to reach out to those around you and make sure everyone feels the joy. If not, find peace in knowing that you are not alone and that you will get through it.
