For the Billionth Time, Political Correctness Is Not the Root of All Evil

There’s a reason the word “correct” is in it.

For the Billionth Time, Political Correctness Is Not the Root of All Evil

This one’s for anyone, including Donald Trump, who has ever implied that political correctness is some evil force out to destroy America, take away guns, and burn all the bacon.

I hear you bemoaning individuals and even whole companies who dare to use modern, respectful language. You say it is somehow authoritarian censorship to be mindful of people different than yourself. The man you elected president was lauded for ‘telling it like it is” when he lies and misrepresents continuously.

As a lover of words, I understand the importance of semantics has in shaping society. Politically correct terms evolved into being as a sign of slow but substantial social progress. Being politically correct is “telling it like it is”. For instance, using dehumanizing language to refer to a group of well, actual humans is not politically correct. It is not correct in general, because you are mislabeling people who are most definitely human. Even without considering the horrible moral implications and consequences of dehumanization, that does not make sense on any level.

There is no sane reason to say “politically correct” in the same tone as “puppy murderers”. The phrase ‘politically correct” is even less deserving of your ridiculous, uncited derision than “snowflake”.

I cannot help but think of the first episode of United Shades of America where African American comedian W. Kamau Bell interviewed the KKK. One member threatened violence against anyone who tried to get him into trouble. He warned that he was not “politically correct”. Alarmingly similar statements were made by white supremacists at the Charlottesville riot recently.

People are literally marching around with torches and weapons (and being quite violent) because some of their racist statues may be coming down and you still think political correctness is the problem?

We have a president that thinks sexual assault is hilarious but God forbid someone say "LGBTQIQA" around you.

So when you say you cannot stand political correctness, are you implying that you are comfortable with far more heinous things than respecting people’s identities would ever entail?

When you say you like a person because they are not politically correct you are basically saying:

“I dig that fella cause he does not call things what they actually are. It is so refreshing to hear groups of people referred to in false ways that reaffirm my personal biases and display ignorance. Those pesky “politically correct” terms that are backed up by science and complex sociological reasoning really get my goat, argh! I would rather use slurs that are not only offensive but historically one-sided.”

You think you are oppressed because your offensive jokes are frowned upon? You are not banned from telling them, people just think you’re a jerk. Why don’t you try having permanent parts of your identity lampooned and lied about for centuries?

While you are at it, why don’t you just drop the vague distaste for political correctness that covers your intolerance and tell us how you really feel?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
