A Letter to My Mama
Lauren Demers

Dear Mama,

I can't say I remember much of my childhood, but I remember a few distinct memories. You were my classes' house mother consistently in grade school. You made sure my birthdays were always the best, aka you got The Teletubbies when I turned four. You laid beside me when I was sick. You always provided food, shelter and clothes, no matter our situation. Most of all, you've made me happy.

As I look back, I can't say that about most. There was always something that have dented relationships I had. That's not to say that we don't fight or disagree, but like always, we can make up. I'm not the easiest to deal with either. I'm headstrong, even when I have no idea how to do something and indecisive, especially when I don't know what to do, but you've always had my best interest at heart. You've always wanted me to succeed, even if we were mad at each other.

I've seen you work multiple jobs to make sure we were okay. I remember getting mad because of it and I'd only see you sometimes, not realizing what you were doing. You worked hard to make sure we would get by and we did. I still feel bad to this day even though I know I couldn't do anything about it, but to watch us struggle and sometimes barely get by affects you. That unrelenting support and care sticks with me because you've allowed me to have. My dream has always been to make millions of dollars just to make sure you get the penthouse right on the beach in whatever state you want. To make sure I can help and support you later so you don't even have to work anymore. You're constantly going and going to make everything better for us.

My mama is the first call when something happens, good or bad. She's the good cook, even if it's just a few meals. The one who always help when I'm sick (and the only one I really want when sick.) She's the care giver that makes sure we're going to be alright. She's the one who can make up catchy songs while doing make up. The one that always cheers me up. The one who has always been in my corner, the one I'm so proud of, and even though this letter can't fully express my love and gratitude, I can say I'm truly lucky to call you my mama.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
