Because you deserve the world

A Thank You To My Best Friend
Mikayla Poindexter

To my best friend:

Three years ago, when we first hung out, I never expected our friendship to grow into what it is today.

When we first met in dance class, I decided to force my friendship on you, and for that, I am not sorry. In the beginning, I was probably an annoying little pest who was two years younger and just wanted to fit in, but it is 3 years later and I would go back and be twice as annoying if it still meant I get to have you in my life.

When we met, I was going through a transition in my life where I knew it was time to leave behind the old friends in order to grow. I honestly believe God put you in my life to help me leave those friends behind because He knew I needed someone to help me let go.

Because of you, I got to experience so much more of life that I would have never experienced without you. You took me to my first high school party, I got to experience my first taste of college life with you, and you introduced me to my first boyfriend.

You deserve the world, but since I can't give that to you, I want to say thank you for a few things.

Thank you for being insanely weird and quirky.

Thank you for teaching me that it's okay to be who I am and that I don't have to change to be accepted.

Thank you for always making sure I feel included.

Thank you for giving the best advice.

Thank you for telling me what I need to hear and not just what I want to hear.

Most of all THANK YOU for making sure we never grew apart no matter what the distance between us was.

We have never been attached at the hip, but we will always be inseparable.

No one else would ever be able to get me to wake up at 7 just to put out tents, come pick them up to pay rent just because they don't feel like walking to their car, or come over at 12 o'clock at night just because they don't want to spend the night alone. I wouldn't trade our friendship for the world.

Thank you for being you.

And to her boyfriend, you deserve a thank you too. Thank you for not taking my best friend away from me and for letting me crash the relationship every now and again.

I'm so lucky to be able to call y'all my best friends.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
