Something doesn’t add up. It’s spring and it’s snowing.
I’m from Florida and, down there, spring means blooming flowers, warm air, and genuine happiness, NOT snow, cold air, and sadness like it means in Kentucky. I was not prepared for this weather and I am starting to hate it.
I was not warned about how to deal with this weather.
To help my fellow Floridians be more prepared than I was, here are seven things I wish someone had told me about cold weather:
1. You’re going to get sick
If you don’t wash your hands and drink water like it’s your job, you will probably get sick. Cold weather seems to make everyone feel horrible.
2. Get an ice scraper
There’s no way you are going to get all that snow off your car by yourself. Ice scrapers make your life so much easier.
3. Or just avoid driving in snow altogether
Driving in snow is terrifying. Ice is terrifying. Just don’t do it and try to carpool with someone who is experienced with it.
4. Wear warm shoes
Whether they’re Bean Boots, Uggs, or just normal boots, invest In something that will keep your feet warm. You’ll thank yourself later.
5. Buy a winter coat
I don’t mean a Patagonia or Northface jacket. I mean a big, marshmallow-looking coat that goes to your knees.
6. Play in the snow
Make the lack of warmth worth it and go sledding, make a snowman, or have a snowball fight with friends! It’ll be cold, but it’ll be worth it.
7. Enjoy the beauty of it
There’s nothing like seeing snow for the first time. It’s absolutely beautiful… for about five seconds until you get cold and need to go back inside.
Winter (and apparently spring) months are truly different outside of Florida. Now that you’re prepared, stay warm and enjoy the good things about it. It won’t last for too long.
