The Fliccs: My Family Away From My Family
Melissa Schoenlein

Back in August, I published an article about the 35 thoughts I had at College band camp. Now it’s November and the season is pretty much almost over. So I want to dedicate this article to a group of 29 people (all girls except one guy) who all play the same instrument: the flicc section.

It’s crazy how we are almost at the end of a very fun season. By the time this gets published, all we will have left events wise is the big game against that school up north, the holiday parade, the marching band banquet, the women’s basketball game, and then the season is done. We would’ve gone to Indianapolis and performed on the field of Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday, and then after that, I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life.

But I know my life has brought me to an amazing section.

Fun fact, I wasn’t even going to join marching band in college. But then after some thoughts once my senior season ended in high school, I knew that with my life being marching band for four years that I wanted to continue with the journey.

God, I am so thankful I did join the Falcon Marching Band.

It has brought me to a group of over 200 people that are like one close knit family. Everyone was very welcoming that first day of fundamentals week. Marching band is truly a function where people of many different backgrounds come together over one goal: music and putting on amazing shows.

But I don’t think I could’ve made it through this season without the fliccs.

I forgot to say what fliccs are, but it’s a combination of flutes and piccolos.

You guys are like my family away from my family. We learned so much about each other within the past few months. We were able to help each other out, whether it be when one is feeling down or whether it’s with drill or music. We are able to have fun outside of band (all of the flicc breakfasts and the activities we did). I just couldn’t ask for a better group of friends than you guys.

Ashley, Bethany, and Melissa. I know you three graduate this year (Ashley at the end of this semester), but I just want to thank you for being there for us even with the short time some of the new fliccs had with you three.

I am always able to look back on the memories I had in high school marching band, but now I am able to add on memories of college marching band.

All thanks to the best section I’ve been a part of. Thanks for being 28 sisters and brother that I never thought I would have in my life now. But hey, I do and I am so blessed.

I will end this article by saying we are not plutes, we are fliccs!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
