How to make a 200 square foot room into a home

We can all agree that the transition to living in a dorm room is rough.

Moving all your stuff from your big room at home into a tiny cell of space is hard, especially when the room is the opposite of cozy and comfortable. I miss my familiar room at home, where I had a queen-sized bed and I didn’t have to share my room with anybody. Now, I sleep in a twin-sized bed in a tiny room that I share with another person. It’s definitely nothing like home, and though I am loving being in college, I miss how my old room was.

So now, my roommate and I have made it our mission to make our 200 square foot, dimly lit dorm as comfortable as possible, and here’s how you can, too.

1. Hang Christmas lights.

This is the best and easiest way to make your room cozy. Nothing is better than turning off the lights and watching a movie with just Christmas lights on. My roommate and I both hung Christmas lights around our sides of the room, and it’s the best idea we’ve ever had.

2. Buy a rug.

The tile floors of a dorm room can get really cold, but putting a rug on the floor can help! It’ll keep your feet warm while also doing the amazing task of making your dorm room look great! This simple decoration will make your room super cozy, I promise.

3. Spray air freshener.

Since candles aren't allowed in dorm rooms, the next best thing to make your room smell amazing is spraying air freshener. My fall favorites are apple cinnamon and vanilla. This will make your room smell amazing, while also making the room feel warm and cozy.

4. Have lots of pillows and blankets.

The best way to make your room feel cozy is for your bed to be warm and comfortable, so lots of pillows and blankets are a must! Wrapping yourself in blankets during the fall and winter is the best feeling!

5. Decorate.

Your dorm won’t feel homey until you have decorated the walls like you would in your room at home. Cover your walls with paintings, posters, pictures, or whatever you like. I have a tapestry and canvases all over my walls, and it makes me feel right at home. The best way to make yourself comfortable in your dorm is to make your dorm “you”.

Once you have Christmas lights, a rug, air freshener, pillow and blankets, and tons of cute decorations, your dorm room will be cozy and homey. Soon, your 200 square foot room can actually feel like a home to you and your roommate.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
