For many, turning 21-years-old is a milestone — most importantly, you get to legally drink. Given the circumstances, there are a lot of emotions that come with reaching this age.
1. Denial
You don't feel any older. You're still 20, maybe you never even felt 20, you're still 19. And people expect that much from you?
2. Anger
You kind of wish people would stop thrusting all this responsibility on you. Chronological and mental are not the same thing. And you don't know what your first drink will be!
3. Bargaining
Maybe people will ignore it. Well, people only care you're 21 if they card you, right? Maybe if you go on being the same person, then people will stop making a big deal of it.
4. Depression
21 marks the official transition into adulthood, and you realize you're no good at adulting. How are you ever going to make it in the world now? You only have two years left to figure it out, and people expect you to know now!
5. Acceptance
Well, you can't stop the clock. And how many other people your age really know how to adult anyway? There's still time, and besides, you can drink now.
Hopefully, I'll get to stage five before the end of the day on my actual birthday... or junior year will be interesting.
