Freshmen beware - now that November has finally arrived, veterans of Buffalo know that the snow is on it’s way. It’s only a matter of time before the ground is hidden beneath layers of white and the wind makes it nearly impossible to walk to class. Below are the five signs that winter is fast approaching, whether we’re ready for it or not.
1. It's dark out by 6 p.m.
Now that daylight savings has passed, it’s darker outside so much sooner. It can feel like you're eating dinner or going to that one night class at midnight, though it's not even 7 o'clock. What better way to make the days feel shorter than to have the night come earlier? The darkness isn’t unique to Buffalo, but the chill that comes along with it is just one sign that it’ll be below freezing on the daily.
2. Everyone is trying to squeeze in their last days of fall clothing
That cute mustard dress that goes perfectly with your knee-high boots? Wear it now while there’s still a chance to be comfortable. Boys, wearing flip-flops doesn't prove that you're impervious to the cold. It’s already mid-way through the semester, so many students have already completely given up on fashion, choosing to don sweatpants and sweatshirts or even shutters a groufit. The season of flannels and jean jackets is coming to an end, soon to be replaced by -
3. One word: NorthFace
Part of the white girl uniform, the NorthFace is a winter essential alongside Ugg boots and a cup of Starbucks. This trend is seen especially in those from Long Island (like myself) and is sometimes replaced by the Sith-lord parka. The NorthFace is a staple for keeping warm during a Buffalo winter, with it's soft exterior that's comfortable, yet not too puffy. While men and women alike switch from their vests to their coats, many refuse to join the trend and instead, wear large, off-brand coats.
4. Every day that it's warm out is a blessing
We’ve been pretty lucky so far. It was in the 70’s last week, which felt unreal for those who have experienced November in Buffalo. Last year around this time it had already snowed, and a couple weeks later we had “Snowvember” aka one of the worst storms Buffalo/the country had ever seen. It’s yet to truly snow, though the end of October showed some hail and flurries. Students are spending as much time outside as possible, hoping to soak in the final days of green grass.
5. Thanksgiving Break - the light at the end of the tunnel
So close, yet so far. Halloween is over, which means the next major holiday to look forward to is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving means food (primarily), going back home and seeing family and friends. Now that November is finally here, it’s a countdown to having a couple days off of school – a rare occasion – and getting some nice, homecooked meals. By the time we come back, there will only be a couple more weeks left in the semester to trudge through snow, cold and worst of all, finals.
