5 Signs Barnard Is The Perfect College For You

Barnard College.

Located in the midst of New York City, this small, women's liberal arts college is like a hidden gem for those who discover it. Whether you are a prospective student or currently a proud Barnard woman yourself, you know Barnard is the perfect college for you based on the following five signs.

1. The small, tight-knit community.

There is nothing more wonderful than being surrounded by people who truly care about each other. While located in an urban setting, Barnard College manages to create a small comfort bubble filled with love and support from Barnard students and faculty members. From relaxing with your friends on The Quad or Lehman Lawn, to sitting down with President Debora Spar for a one-to-one discussion in her office: Barnard College lets every student know that they are always welcome on campus.

2. The visible presence of female empowerment.

When it comes to Barnard women, we are proud to be women. We are confident. We are bold. We do not remain silent. Instead, we want our opinions to be heard. Barnard College encourages their students to embrace their leadership qualities and leave their own mark on the global stage. With Barnard's renowned alumnae such as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anna Quindlen '74 to entrepreneur Martha Stewart '63, Barnard students can also succeed in their own future career fields as women.

3. Want to be intellectually stimulated.

At Barnard, one will never be bored during their four years on campus. Since Barnard College is a small institution, it is fortunate enough to provide Barnard women with small classrooms to thrive in. Cinneah El-Amin, a junior Africana studies major, shared that, "Barnard women...[are] intellectually curious," while Delaney Wing, a senior English major and dance minor, appreciated the engaging classroom environments professors created. For many Barnard students, the opportunity to share various opinions and gather new knowledge from their peers—both inside and outside the classroom—is priceless.

4. Very highly motivated.

Barnard College carefully searches for the smartest women all over the world and houses them under one roof. Barnard women are known to never back away from a challenge and take advantage of each opportunity thrown at them. Want to be a pre-med student with an English major? Go ahead! Interested in conducting scientific research for 10 weeks through the Summer Research Institute at Barnard? Why not! The possibilities are endless for Barnard women and they know it very well.

5. Envisioning New York City as a second home.

There is no other city in the world like New York City. And for students at Barnard, they know this for a fact. Students can access and take advantage of all the opportunities the city holds. From visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art—for free—for a art history assignment, to landing your first internship on Wall Street, New York City is a perfect playing field for the brightest college women to flourish. On top of that, Barnard women experience a melting pot of diverse cultures in New York City all at their fingertips.

Barnard women strive to become the best possible version of themselves during their four years at Barnard College. It is a unique institution like no other women's college in the country. Barnard College offers a rigorous liberal arts education while having the resources of a large research university next door. For Barnard women, we chose Barnard College because we knew we belonged here. We were meant to be here.

So to any prospective student out there, if you believe Barnard College is the college for you: trust your instinct. Because it might very well be true!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
