Coach Herm Edwards has a big decision to make. After Senior Manny Wilkins Jr. graduated after the previous season that left the starting QB position open to takers. As it stands, there are four players jiving for the spot.
First we have incoming freshman, Joey Yellen. Yellen is a four-star, pro-style, quarterback from Mission Viejo, California with a height of 6'2" and 211lbs. From his highlights, Yellen has a good arm for down field and outside passes while still remaining in the pocket and he definitely has a good eye for making plays. Yellen ranked 39th in California and 293rd nationally.
Next is Jayden Daniels, another incoming freshman from southern California. Daniels is a four-star, dual-threat quarterback standing 6'3" and 180lbs from San Bernardino. Funny enough Yellen and Daniels competed against one another in the Under Armor 2019 All-American Game. I think it's safe to say though, this guy has an ARM, and he can throw under some good pressure. From his highlights, he even has a good set of legs under him, so if he starts could we see another Wilkins-like hurdle? Maybe so. Daniels ranked 3rd in California and 39th overall nationally.
Third in line, and third incoming freshman, is Ethan Long, from West Linn, Oregon. Long is another pro-style quarterback, with three-stars, standing 6'2" at 212lbs. From his highlights, Long as a good, all-around, textbook quarterback, clearly able to read plays very well and has good field awareness in order to execute accordingly. Long ranked 3rd in Oregon and 557th nationally.
Fourth, we have Trenton Bourguet, another (yes I know they have a lot of freshman this year) incoming freshman from Marana, Arizona. Bourguet stands at 6'0" and 165lbs, he may be a little smaller than the rest of the prospect quarterbacks, but don't be fooled. Bourguet broke the Arizona 5A state record for touchdown passes in one season, and has been known for being mobile in the pocket. He is taking on a big walk-on role at ASU.
Lastly we have returning junior and dual-threat quarterback, Dillon Sterling-Cole. He's been known in practice for his quick decision making and leadership skills, and has been a formidable backup to Wilkins for the past couple years. Maybe this is his year to break out and show what he can really do after making a name for himself in his hometown of Houston, Texas and being a four-star prospect at the time of being recruited.
Safe to say Coach Edwards has a tough decision to make when it comes to picking who will be the starting quarterback for the Sun Devils this year. Anyways folks, place your bets on who it'll be and we'll see how this next season pans out.
