At the end of 2016, I think all of us can agree that this year has been completely terrible. From the celebrity deaths, misogynistic presidency, and the numerous personal struggles, it appeared 2016 would never end. However, something we can control in the new year is the way we perceive ourselves. We have the power to love ourselves and each other in time for January.

1. Take time for yourself

2017 is the year to stop worrying about every little thing. This constant obsession with helping others stops us from helping ourselves. It certainly is not a bad thing to want to help the people around us--that is what makes us human. But, do not forget about you. Whatever it is that make you happy, do it. Binge watch that season (or entire series) of your favorite show on Netflix. Take time out to color. Take time out for you. You deserve one on one time with you!

2. Stay true to your moral compass

While wallowing in occasional self-pity (because that is normal, right?), do not abandon who you are. When you do not feel 100 percent, do not forget what makes you more you. Do not forget that you are against drinking and doing drugs. Abandoning your morals lead to feeling isolated from your own being. Remember that you are a morally right person. Always.

3. Surround yourself with positive influences

Not only should you be improving yourself this new year, you should improve your social circle. Spend time with people who believe in you and that love you unconditionally. Spend time with the people that appreciate life, and who want to spend their time living freely.

4. Embrace your inner beauty

Often, people have the resolution of losing weight and becoming more “fit.” The longing to be perfect on the outside forces us to neglect our inner body. We need to feel good before we can look good.

5. Love yourself

We can be real--we all have our flaws. These flaws are what makes us unique. Love the things that separate you from everyone else. You are perfectly imperfect.

These resolutions need to start in 2017, but they must never end. We all need to make a grand effort for our beings. We need to improve our self-worth, and love ourselves.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
