Myth: Abortion will cause the fetus pain.
An electroencephalogram or EEG measures the electrical activity in a brain. Mostly because of this medical procedure, we are able to tell that a fetus does not have the ability to feel pain for quite some time. This is backed up by the Journal of the American Medical Association’s publication of their study Fetal Pain: A systematic Multidisciplinary Review of the Evidence. The study states that fetuses do not register pain until approximately the 29 or 30-week mark. No evidence has come up to cause any legitimate dispute in the scientific or medical community as to this conclusion since it's publication in 2005.
Myth: It’s really easy to get an abortion in the United States.
While it is legal to get an abortion, it’s also lawful for states to forge legal restrictions on abortion. Some of these laws have absolutely no purpose apart from making safe abortion harder to obtain. Many states impose waiting periods, which in some states can last up to 72 hours. Certain states also have was in place requiring the pregnant person to hear the heartbeat of the fetus and/or look at their ultrasound. Several states even legally require that the clinic or doctor providing the abortion to give false information to the patient.
Additionally, laws are passed regarding requirements of the clinic buildings, subsequently forcing them to either make costly changes or shut down. These laws include requirements for the widths of the hallways, the locations of the clinics, the size of the janitor's closets and the fabric of the window curtains.
Myth: Crisis pregnancy centers or CPCs are put in place to help people seeking abortions find different options.
The only intention of a crisis pregnancy center is to get someone not to have an abortion. The beginning, middle, and end goal is the fetus, not the person who's carrying it. CPCs deliberately mislead people who are looking for abortion clinics, into thinking that their center provides abortions. They give out false information to people looking for help, including telling people seeking abortions that abortion is linked with breast cancer, major depression, and infertility.
Myth: Abortion has serious health risks.
While back alley or DIY abortions are hugely immensely unsafe, termination of pregnancy done in a clinic by a professional is actually quite safe. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, there are 0.6 deaths for every 100,000 abortions performed. Though there have been many studies on the subject, rumors of serious health risks, both mental and physical, have never been found by any legitimate study.
Myth: If we make abortion illegal, except in cases where people absolutely ‘have to’ have abortions, everyone else will just carry the pregnancy to term.
There are a lot of ideas going around about when abortion is necessary. Most of them seem to be that if the life of the mother is at risk, and/or the fetus will never be able to live outside of the womb, abortion should be permitted. However, people resort to back alley abortions for virtually every reason on health. People are willing to put their lives at risk in order to terminate unwanted pregnancies. The reason as to why the pregnancy is unwanted has little to no bearing on that fact. Knowing that, there's a strong argument for the idea that situations where people 'have to have' abortions are when they feel the need to get them.
