Most people start their sophomore year of college going to class when necessary and then going back to their apartment and lounging around for the rest of the day.
Not me. My sophomore year started with classes followed right by formal recruitment in the evening.I left class and headed straight back to my dorm, yes my dorm, and got myself as dolled up as I could to prepare myself to talk to potential sisters for hours.
That whole weekend was a blur, at my school, our recruitment lasts from Thursday until the next Monday which is Bid Day.
Looking back, I think I am more nervous now to be on the other side of recruitment than being the one going through it, but that’s not why you clicked on this article. You clicked here to read about my year in review which is what I am going to give you right now.
All in all, it has been a fun time. This may sound crazy to some of you out there, sometimes it still shocks me, but I love going to chapter meetings. I love that I get to spend at least two hours every week with my sisters devoted to the one cause of getting through this meeting. It may sound like I’m kidding but I’m not. I love knowing what is going on in our chapter and community and since our sorority is ending its second year on campus, we are all super excited to be receiving information about our house.
We are the among the lucky few FSL (Fraternity and Sorority Life as our campus calls it) who got a house rather quickly, and in our case, it’s being built for us.We don’t have to use a prebuilt, pre-owned, smelly frat house.
We get a brand spanking new, beautiful, white-bricked mansion to live in. Every chapter we LIVE for the chance for our Housing Manager to spill what she has about the house, like bed count and interior design.
Another thing that amazes me about being in a sorority is how much I actually missed these girls while on Winter Break for a month. Anyone that knows me, knows that I am not a big fan of people. I like my alone time but this sorority has changed me.
Like I said before, I love chapter meetings because I get to sit with my sisters and catch up from the past week. Being in this organization has also made me more outgoing… maybe. I have always been outgoing, I mean, I started a new club during my first semester on campus (even if it isn’t around anymore I still did it). I love joining organizations and being in a position of leadership.
I am never one to be passive about anything. I love being involved. Now, I love to go into interviews, be it for a campus organization or a job, and talk about how I am a member of an amazing sorority and all the amazing opportunities that it has brought me.
Being in my sorority also made me discover that I can be madly in love with a little pin. The day I got my badge, I ran to go get it, ran back to my room, and did a mini photo shoot with it complete with glitter. It was one of the best days ever and I almost cried when I saw that it had our chapter and initiation date engraved on the back next to our initials. All in all, being in a sorority has been such an amazing experience.
Though it may be hard at times, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I love my letters and my sisters... and not to mention all the cool merch that you can buy! If you are debating going through recruitment, just do it. You will find where you belong and if you are worried about spending all that money on something that seems pointless now... do it. It is 100% worth it.
