When my theology professor first mentioned an optional 8:00am walking tour of Philadelphia on our first Saturday morning of college, I was initially opposed to missing out on some much-needed sleep after a tiring week of summer camp (a.k.a. orientation). After some inner deliberation, I am so happy that I decided to attend this trip and form close bonds with my new classmates, who are now my greatest friends on campus.
Our day began at the SEPTA station on the South Campus of Villanova. As freshmen, the thought of independently venturing into Philadelphia via public transportation was simply terrifying. As we scrolled through countless Google maps and fished through our pockets for $3.50 in change, we began to feel like true collegiate adults. We stepped onto that train with confidence, ready to embark on our first journey as freshmen.
After our 47-minute train ride, we finally made it to downtown Philly and met up with our professor. As a squad, we strolled through the beautiful Magic Gardens, the historic charm of Elfreth’s Alley, and even the Liberty Bell. After walking over 13 miles (not the easiest task for a washed-up high school soccer player), we luckily stopped for lunch at the Reading Terminal Market. This area was bustling with countless vendors, and the blend of aromas culminated into an indescribable experience for the senses. Most importantly, I can wholeheartedly confirm that my lunchtime gyro was simply majestic.
While reflecting upon our journey through the streets of Philadelphia, my classmates and I agreed that the Magic Gardens was definitely our favorite part of this excursion; its urban renaissance vibes were absolutely majestic. I felt immediately transported into an entirely different world full of exquisite artistry and complex attention to detail.
After finishing up our amazing tour, we exhaustedly trudged back to our new home at Villanova. This experience with my classmates not only immersed us into the cultural depth of downtown Philadelphia, but we also got a great head start on battling the freshman fifteen!
