To My First 'College Friends' That Probably Kept Me From Dropping Out

If I hadn't met you, I probably would have went home the day after I arrived.

College is the time to start fresh; to realize what you want to do in life and then go do it.

College is meant to prep you for the real world, possibly far away from home and everything you know. College is a strange and scary time. But, with friends (new or old), the experience can be amazing.

So, to my first college friends,

Before starting at our school, I didn’t know what to expect… How I would do living on my own, taking care of everything by myself. I questioned when (if at all) I would make friends – I stressed about it for so long.

And then I met you guys.

I think we all realized that we were just as scared as everyone else. Just about everyone coming in don't know anyone, and that, in a way, made it easier to bond.

Thank you for being willing to just jump right into adventures and life experiences.

It’s hard enough for me to break out of my shell, let alone break out of my shell with complete strangers. But, college is about finding who you really are (even if it means gossip sessions until 2 AM).

Thank you for accepting me without even knowing my story.

For so long I wanted to forget my identity back home and start a new life focused on who I am instead of what I'm leaving behind. I wasn’t sure how well that would happen, but thanks to you all, I have never been more comfortable being myself.

Thank you for opening up to me.

I would be so easy to just not let me in… To not trust me with your problems because I am, in fact, still a stranger. But, you felt (and still feel) comfortable enough with me to share who you really are, too – and that means more than you know.

Thank you for going on spur of the moment adventures with me and being down to do random things at any time during the day.

Those milkshake and Target runs will never be forgotten – along with the heart-to-hearts that went with them.

Thank you for making my move to a new place smooth.

I am convinced that if I hadn’t had found you all, I would have gone home the day after I got here. I love you all and thank you for an amazing start to the year – here’s to a memorable and unforgettable four years.

Love,

Your first college friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
