When I was going to college, I was super nervous about finding friends to hang out with as I think any incoming freshman might be.
I was coming out of high school where I had a solid group of friends who loved me and supported me and going into an environment where I didn't know anyone. Rightfully, I was nervous. It turned out though that my friends were meant to be because little did I know I was going to meet my college best friend on a blind "date."
I was accepted into Florida State for Summer C and being from Tallahassee, I decided to live at home while attending classes for those six weeks before I moved into a dorm in the fall. I had been going to a small group bible study during the fourth week of classes.
As I was getting ready to go my mom came into my room and informed me that our friend Beau had texted her. My mom told me that Beau had told her a new girl that he knew from his hometown of Tampa was going to be coming to bible study that night. Her name was Abbey and she was a freshman going through summer C like me and was looking for someone to be friends with because she was homesick.
I was admittedly nervous to meet her but away from Bible study, I went. When she got there I said hi and introduced myself as the girl Beau had told her about and we sat next to each other. The reason we became friends was not becasue of this, it was because of what we did next. Someone suggested that we play a card game called Nertz. Not to brag or anything but I was a pro- and Abbey? Well, her skills were definitely not on my level so we partnered up. That one small game of Nertz sealed our friendship.
Since then both of us have told the other that after we parted that night we texted or called out moms and informed them that we had met a girl that we thought was going to be our best friend in college and we were both right.
After that night we hung out a few times and slowly solidified our friendship by going to lunch and hanging out one on one a few more times. We started going to the gym and finally by the time the end of freshman year rolled around we were officially best friends.
We moved in together sophomore year and lived in the same apartment. Now we live in the world's cutest house with two of our other best friends and honestly, it couldn't be better.
I'm so thankful that Abbey and I got set up to be friends, and I'm even more thankful that it worked out. More often than not you hear stories about how blind "dates" don't work out but here's a change of pace because ours worked out amazingly.
