As a college student, I constantly find myself searching for what my purpose in life is, and wondering what the end of my college career will result in. I am always wondering where will I be in a few years. What was I placed on this earth to be and to do? As I'm sure most of you can imagine, asking myself these questions often lead to over-analyzing, worrying that my life will only be mediocre.
Last semester I started reading a book by the great Max Lucado called “You Were Made to Make a Difference.” The first chapter started out with the verse:
“No eye has seen, no ear heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1st Corinthians 2:9
That verse brought so much comfort to me. Though my life may seem routine now, God has a purpose for me, as long as I remain in Him, and Him in me. If I love God, He will lead me and my life in a big direction. Sometimes, it seems like I am stuck and just waiting for a sign or for something big to happen in my life. However, what God wants us to do is have faith, and be patient that his will for us is better than anything we could have ever imagined.
We were each custom created by a God who is head over heels in love with us and designed each of us differently from anyone else on this earth. He has created a divine purpose for each of us and our lives. In order to grasp the full potential that our lives can have, it is up to us individually to decide if we will do what God designed us to do. Our purpose, I have discovered, is to love him and know his love for us in return. Our purpose is to show his love to others. When we live out this purpose, and only then, can we live a life of meaning.
“It is in Christ we find out who we are and what we are living for.” Ephesians 1:11
What most of us want is a life full of love, joy peace, and passion. We want our lives to matter, and we want to be passionate about whatever our purpose is. Without having Christ in the center of your life, there will be a void in your life that you cannot fill. Without wanting God's will to be your life's purpose, you will constantly be searching for something. When we walk with God in our lives there is a sense of fulfillment and direction that fuels the idea that our lives matter because it is directed at a greater purpose.
Although I may not understand why my life is the way it is at times, I know that I can find peace in knowing that I am able to find my true purpose for my life in Christ. Because of God, my life matters, and it will be anything but mediocre.
