Hiding Behind The Door In Our Minds

What If You Could Physically Enter Your Mind?

Hiding Behind The Door In Our Minds

The mind is a strange and complex thing. It makes everyone unique and has so much to do with who we are. It can cause us to be incredibly smart or impressively creative. The mind can work wonders and it can also be the thing that destroys people. Imagine, if you could physically enter your mind...what do you think that would be like?

Lets see...

The Enchanted Forest

Giphy

Imagine walking through a forest and seeing nothing but green. Hearing the faint sounds of birds chirping and the sound of you walking. The sun is peeping out through the trees and soaking through your skin. You feel like you are walking through an enchanted forest and you finally feel free. All of your worries wash away and you can feel your mind clear.

The Door

Giphy

Within the enchanted forest there is a door that leads to a cave. The door gives off a feeling that doesn't sit with you. Like the door holds all of your worst nightmares and yet it draws you in.

The Mirror

Giphy

When you open the door, you see a room full of mirrors. The room is gray with a bit of sun soaking in but not enough to lighten up the room. The only thing you can see is yourself because everywhere you look, your reflection is staring back at you. Eventually, you start hating your reflection because the longer you stare the more you notice. You notice every flaw that you have and every blemish. You notice the things inside of yourself that you don't like.

The Box

Tenor

Then you look down at the floor and notice something that wasn't there before. A box sitting in the middle of the floor. You open it up to see memories. Memories that you miss and memories you would like to forget. The bittersweet and the sour. The memories you have put in the back of your mind because you were afraid of the pain they might bring.

The Pain

Giphy

After that, you start feeling the pain physically. As if the sadness had physical power like a giant headache. The agony of the memories and the mirrors all overwhelm you. You can almost feel the physical pain of a heartbreak.

The Run

Giphy

Instead of letting the pain win... you decide to run as fast as you can. You push throw the door and run back into the woods. They don't look as peaceful and instead they are dark and the trees are dying. You don't look back and you keep running from the pain.

The Peace

WeHeartIt

After you get away from the pain and stop worrying about the past, you finally feel a bit of peace. You can feel the sun back on your face again. You take in a deep breath and let all the pain go.

Wattpad

And you decide to never open that door again...

The idea of this stems from an idea that is created in the show The Originals with a character named Elijah. Inside his mind is a red door and behind this door is all of his bad memories and the worst parts of himself. The concept relates to a lot of people...

The peaceful meadow is that part of your brain that allows you to use creativity and learn more the wonderful things in life. It is the humble part of you that can see the joy in life. The door is that part of your mind that you like to keep in the back because bringing it up is too painful. The mirrors are the things you don't like about yourself and the box are the memories that you don't want to remember. Whether it was a traumatic event or a good memory of a person who is no longer there. The physical pain represents the emotional pain people feel in their darkest moments. Extreme emotional pain can have a physical effect to it. Running is what we do whenever we are trying to escape pain, ourselves or other people we haven't gotten to trust. The darkening of the woods show how even good days can be darken if someone is in a bad headspace. Finally, the peace is what we feel when we laugh or smile. That moment where something makes you happy and distracts you from any sadness or pain you might feel. The peaceful moments are the moments you should hold onto.

It's okay to have a door in your mind that you close yourself off to because most people have their own version. Just don't throw too much behind that door because you might close off the wrong memories. You might ruin the one chance you have to be happy or learn to love yourself. Times can get tough and it is important hold onto all good memories even if they are bittersweet ones. We all only have one life to live and we can't live it hiding behind a door.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
