Saltwater covers almost 70% of our Earth. These oceans are home to almost 9 million animal species and contain about 700 known beaches. The benefits of saltwater are numerous; from a gentle evening breeze to a vital mode of transportation to the important health advantages they provide for humans.
Like others who grew up at the beach, I felt connected to the ocean right from the beginning. It all started when as a kid I would run away from the waves with my siblings, playing endless games trying to escape the water, but really just wanting to jump right in. When we were younger, I loved the ocean at first because of how much fun it provided, then later because of how big and endless it seemed, and then the reasons just kept pouring in - like the waves.
There are so many aspects to the ocean. It can be used for shipping, boating, swimming, wildlife-watching / catching, or just for floating. Not to mention seeing a sunrise or sunset from the beach! There’s just something amazing about the depth and the endlessness of the ocean. Some people even believe you can hear it through a conch shell.
Saltwater is not only good for the soul, but also for the body and mind. It cleans your skin, reduces anxiety, improves breathing and the immune system, and much more. Saltwater isn’t just something that sits at the edge of the sand for our enjoyment. It’s home to millions of animals, many of which provide much-needed, healthy food. Through the food, the economies of numerous towns and cities thrive.
“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came” (JFK). So, as a “thalassophile”, I know I am so lucky to have grown up right next door to something so breathtaking.
