A Finals Survival Guide

Buckle up for the most stressful week of the year.

A Finals Survival Guide
Nicole Cantore

That dreadful time of year is quickly approaching… finals week. And if you’re anything like me, you need a few things to help if you plan to make it out alive. So, I present to you a guide to all the must-haves for surviving finals.

Bomb playlist

Now this one can be changed up and versatile depending on what you’re feeling. I personally recommend some movie scores, but that’s just me. Either way, a good playlist is key to keeping you motivated throughout the hours of studying.

Comfy clothes

Often looked over, being comfortable as you basically move-in to the library is key. Grab your favorite pair of sweats, some slippers and a blanket if you’re feeling adventurous, because you will not be leaving the library for the next 7 days. Trust me.

Snacks, preferably junk food

If you don’t stress eat, then you will. I personally lived off of Easy Mac finals week of my freshman year, but that’s just me. Make sure to stock up on the candy, the cookie dough, chips, etc. Having food to drown your sorrows in is as common as the mental breakdowns that will happen.

Study buddy

You’re going to need someone to keep you on track and not distracted. Your friend doesn't even have to be in the same classes as you, they just need to help you stay focused! And a partner to suffer through breakdowns with you is always a plus.

TV show to watch for your break

Before finals week begins, pick that show you’ve been dying to watch because you will need a break. And limit yourself to one episode, which is very difficult with Netflix’s automatic feature. I know this is hard but an hour is all you can spare.

Color coding

Oh, the joy that is color coding. If you hope to do at least decent on an exam, bust out those highlights. Organizing your information so you can focus on what’s important is a must! Plus, it makes your notes look really pretty and who doesn’t want that!

Quizlet

Truly a gift from the gods. Quizlet is the ultimate lifesaver during finals. Whether you make a flashcard set yourself or some beautiful soul has already made one for you, utilize this website.

Scheduled naps

You will not sleep. This is a fact and there’s no way of getting around it. The chances of you forgetting to sleep because you still have 6 more chapters to get through by tomorrow are very high, so in order for you to get some rest you will literally need to schedule in times when you can close your eyes. Remember, sleep is a necessity!

Scheduled breakdowns.

What we all live for during finals week. If you don’t have a breakdown then you’re doing finals wrong… It is basically a right of passage to lose it at least once during finals. So get some tissues and candy, you're gonna need it.

Happy studying and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
