Finals Week: Music Majors Have Finals Too

This is for everyone that took my favorite practice room this week.

Every major comes with its own struggles, and when it comes to finals week, everyone thinks it's all about studying. As a music major, you definitely need to study, but there is another layer added on that not every major tends to think about. To us, this is all nothing new, we're used to the hoops we have to jump through to finish the semester.

1. We have pre-finals week

A lot of our classes are a small credit load, so they don't meet that often. Sometimes it's nice, however, when it comes to finals, we don't get an allotted time to take our finals during finals week. Most professors still choose to have a final though, so do you know what that means? We have a pre-finals week.

2. Dressing up

Our juries consist of a business casual attire. You have a jury on your primary instrument, and then if you're in a voice class, and even a piano class. You'll get lucky if any of these are on the same day, if not, you're looking like you're building your own empire for three days straight. Do you just so happen to minor in a different instrument or even have a double major? Add another jury on and another business casual outfit.

3. All of the practice rooms are going to be taken

Everyone is automatically going to decide that they shouldn't have put off practicing to the last minute and they're going to take your favorite practice room. Excuse me, I've been practicing in this exact room at this exact time on this day every week and now it just so happens to be taken? Next thing you know, you're standing in the hallway waiting for someone to leave their room so you can snatch it.

4. Getting asked if you are doing jury duty

When we say we have a jury, we basically mean a music final. It's just called a jury because we basically play a piece of music that we have been working on all semester in front of a jury that is usually your main instrument professor and someone else. So next time you hear someone during finals week say they have a jury, try to think if they're a music major before you open your mouth.

5. Having so much work to do and none at the same time

We are a very busy group of people considering we usually take 18 credits and some of our classes take up half of a credit. It adds up to the point where you have 12 classes and then 12 finals. You realize how much work you have to do considering you have so many finals until you think about that sight singing final that's going to take 10 minutes. Then you think about that music theory final that is probably going to take you a full two hours to complete, but it's not until actual finals week.

Be proud though, you can make it through and you're one step closer to getting your degree and doing what you want to do forever.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
