February 14, 2015 "Fifty Shades of Grey" finally arrived in theaters after the book took the world by storm selling over 125 million copies. Fans of the series finally got the chance to see the first book come to life on the big screen. After seeing the first film, fans highly anticipated a sequel. Now, about two years later, fans are finally able to see book two come to life.
For those that did not like the highly sex-based plot of the first film, the second film provides the audience with deeper insight into Christian and Ana's relationship. Darker explores the emotional side of their relationship.
The second film also has a deeper, darker, and more sophisticated plot. There are quite a few instances that put Ana and Christian's relationship to the test. An ex-submissive of Christian's reappears threatening the life of Ana because of her immense jealousy. Mrs. Robinson, Christian's ex-dominant, attempts to break up Ana and Christian by threatening Ana. She tries to convince Ana that she could never be enough for Christian or be what he needs. Ana's boss is another character in the movie that attempts to cause a rift in their relationship. He even forces himself on Ana at one point.
For those that read the book, you may be a tad disappointed. Like most adaptations, the movie just cannot contain everything that the reader finds important from the book. There are aspects in the beginning of the movie that differ from the book. Instead of arriving at Jose's show together, Chrisitan surprises Ana there. Other differences include the complete lack of Christian's therapist. I was disappointed that he was not in the movie because I believe him to be an extremely important character. Later on when Ana gives Christian the keychain that says "yes" there isn't the same significance in the movie as there is in the book. In the book, when Ana gives Christian the box with the keychain before her meeting with his therapist, it shows him that no matter what she finds out about him she will still love him and never leave him. Another significant difference I recognized was that Kate does not find out the type of relationship Ana and Christian have with one another. She remains ignorant in the movie.
Overall, despite these differences, I really enjoyed the film. Even knowing what was going to happen, I was still kept on the edge of my seat and was remained intrigued throughout the entirety of the film. The film itself takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I recommend this movie for any fan of the series or first film and any others who enjoys romance with a bit of drama.
I am incredibly excited for the third film. Let's hope this time that it doesn't take two years for the next movie to be released.
