When I first saw "Fiddler on the Roof" at Toby`s Dinner Theater, I fell in love with the musical right away. The passion of each actor was engrossing, and I couldn't put my eyes down.
Over the years I have seen it a few times, including at a local theater group, and enjoyed it just as much. I went and saw it again by myself, and it was just a good when I first saw it.
A theme in the musical is love, and how people deal with love and order within their community. As a society back in the 1800s, they do a good job of portraying the way people loved and enjoyed life back then.
Even without technology or modern day necessities, they still are able to function well and prosper within their society. Love is a key theme in the musical because the young children of the main character are posed with the question of marriage and who to love while adhering to the rules of their society.
The question of love comes around most of the musical because there is no escape from what true love is and how it is shown within the society. Without having tensions with each of the characters, the musical would not be good at drawing your attention.
We find that whenever love poses a question of who and what, there will always be tension within both parties and also internal vs external love.
Love is tricky, and love makes us do things we never imagined.
If we all were like a fiddler on the roof then we tend to think about simple times and live life in simplicity. Aren't we all a "Fiddler on the Roof?" Many would say yes, but could you say you are? Think about it.
