There was a time when those who suffered mental illnesses were treated as though they are freaks of nature. They were seen as unholy or possessed by some sort of spirit. They were treated as less than human, as though they were animals. They were locked in jails and asylums instead of given treatment for their conditions. There were no programs for those who were mentally ill, they were simply ignored as they suffered.
However, times have changed greatly. There is much more research and many more outreach programs for those who have some sort of mental illness. In fact, there are more programs to help people who are plagued by diseases of the mind, though there are still not enough attention given to this issues. Here is how you can help with that.
First, there are many opportunities for volunteering. Throughout the country there are countless mental health clinics that are borderline impoverished and therefore need volunteers. Being a volunteer does not take that much time out of your life. It is a few hours of your life given to aid those who need it.
There are a variety of ways that you can volunteer for a mental health clinic. If you are a therapist or counselor, you could offer you services to those who need help. In fact, if you have any skills, you can use them to help these people.
But just as important it speaking up about these issues This is probably the easier way with which you can become an advocate for mental health issues. There are a great many ways in which you can speak up. You can go on social media and post information about it. You can tell the people around you about what is going on currently with mental health treatment. You could anything you want to speak up.
