I have met a few people who have strange ideas about college and their freshman year. College is a whole new experience and nothing like high school. So I threw together a list of a few things that I would tell freshman their first year of college.
It's okay to miss a class because you slept in.
I promise you everyone has done it once or twice. Just don't make a habit out of it. Once it is a habit, it is harder to actually get up and go to class. Try to always go to your classes otherwise. You never know when the teacher is going to drop a pop quiz or give you crucial information. Missing that kind of stuff is hard to make up.
It is completely okay to be homesick.
You've lived with your family for years and suddenly you are away from them. I am in my junior year currently and I still broke down the first night that I was away from home. It is hard to be away from the people you lived with and love.
Get involved on campus.
Joining clubs will help you make new friends and expand your interests. Even if it's something that you are only half interested in, give the club a chance. Even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone, get out there and do something.
Communicate, communicate, communicate.
If something is wrong with your roommate, friends, anything, do NOT put it off. Say something and fix the problems. The only way things will get better is if you communicate. Giving the silent treatment, ignoring them, or pushing them away will not solve anything.
Most importantly, college is a 40-hour-a-week job.
You need to spend a lot of time outside of classes actually doing work or otherwise you will slip behind and probably fail. College isn't easy, you need to really work at it.
