When I first bought "Life is Strange" off of Steam I didn't really know what to expect of it. I knew it was a story based video game, and the choices that you make would affect the outcome of the story. What I didn't know was how relatable it can be to some people and how much you can learn from it.
Please do not read further if you want to avoid spoilers!
For those who may not know, "Life is Strange" focuses around an 18 year old girl named Max who aspires to be a photographer. She is also shy and often prefers taking photos rather than partying and interacting with people, so she is kinda like me sometimes. Then, when she saves a girl from death by going back in time, she discovers that she has rewind powers.
Turns out, the girl she saved was Chloe, her best friend from her childhood, who Max lost contact with after a few years. Together, they both figure out Max's power, while trying to solve the disappearance of Rachel Amber. There is also a storm coming which may be caused by Max's power in the end she has to make a choice in which neither of them is really a pleasant one, because either way people die.
There is also the prequel that came out, "Before The Storm," which focuses on Rachel and Chloe's adventures. I have also played it and I am still waiting on the final episode to come out.
I have also learned a few things myself from playing this game, one of the main things I have learned is how important it is to take care of your mental health. Chloe, in "Before the Storm," is struggling after her dad died. Her grades start slipping, her personality changes, she starts doing drugs, staying out late, and she has these dreams that take place around the time her dad died. The one line that stood out to me was what Samuel the janitor told her in an optional conversation, "It is okay to not be okay."
That stood out to me because we have all been there. We have all felt like Chloe before, we have all felt like there was no hope. We have all wanted to just scream, we have all wanted to smash everything in our sight. Just know that you are loved and there are people that are there for you, sometimes you have to learn to let people in.
We also learn to be kind to people no matter what. Those who played the game know what happens with Kate Marsh and the viral video. It also teaches you to think before you post something online, because we all know some Victoria Chases in our lives that like to post before they think. It can ruin someone's life, no matter how popular it may make you think about the person in the video. Once it goes viral, it never truly goes away.
You can also learn that not everything is what it seems. Remember when everyone thought Nathan was the bad guy? But then, it turned out to be that hot photography teacher that was the villain all along. Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. Someone who acts so normal could end up being a pervert who likes taking pictures of unconscious women.
I also feel like Max saving Chloe was a way of giving Max a second chance to reconnect with Chloe. Those chances wont happen everyday so never take time with your loved ones for granted.
There are many different things that you can learn from video games. Sometimes they are more than just button bashers, they have an actual story in there as well. So the next time you play a video game pay, attention to the story. It might be a good one.
