I am a feminist. Does that make me a crazy girl that rages at anything that might offend my gender? No. Does it mean that I support free bleeding and girls not shaving their armpits? Heck No. I believe that males and females should be equal socially, economically, and politically. Nothing more, nothing less. It seems to me like girls are taking the term "feminist" and changing it into something that makes us look more entitled than anything -- like the world owes us something. One movement that has been huge in the feminist world is #FreeTheNips, a hashtag that has gone viral on social media, promoting females to lose their bras...and in some cases, their shirts entirely. I am a feminist and I do not support this movement.
In the 90s, it was more common to see a female without a bra on than with. Basically every actress in 90s TV shows are rockin' it bra-less. So why do I find it such a big deal that we want to bring it back? Because it left for a reason, people. The #FreeTheNipple movement was started by an American filmmaker, Lina Esco, who produced a film to show how hypocritical New York's nudity laws are. However, the movement really got going when Bruce Willis' daughter documented her topless walk through New York City on Twitter. Since then, tons of celebrities (Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, etc.) have gone to major events proudly showing off their nipples. Seeing this makes me cringe.
I understand that #FreeTheNips has great intentions and I can easily grasp why it has held the focus of so many females lately. There's nothing better than coming home at the end of a long day and taking your bra off so you can finally relax, but there's a reason why we cover ourselves up. There's a reason why we decided back in the early 2000s to start wearing bras more regularly. Nipples are sacred, ladies. If we leave them out for anyone to see, then they lose how special everyone thinks they are. It's no lie that guys are wired to love boobs. Why? Because of the nipple. If we exposed them every day, uploaded pictures showing them off, they'd just become another thing that people are used to seeing. Another note: I don't even think it looks good to wear shirts without bras, so what's the big deal?
I am a feminist and I support many feminist movements, the expulsion of the tampon tax being one of them. I'm going to support girls with whatever take they have on #FreeTheNipple, but you can catch me sticking to wearing a bra.
