Fourth wave feminism means uniting to wear pink uterus hats, women’s marches, combating sexual harassment in the workplace, and rape culture.
The use of social media to allow women to come together and share their stories through social media has allowed for widespread use of the word feminist for both men and women. Celebrities and politicians have come forward to apologize after being accused.
It’s great that we’re all banding together to dismantle the patriarchy or whatever, but can we focus less on manspreading on the subway and more on female genital mutilation? I AM a feminist, but let’s not pretend that some of these causes are that high and mighty when there are better things that we can be focusing our time on.
There’s been a big wave of feminism in the last five or six years with the use of social media.
The #Metoo movement shed light on how sexual harassment (and unfortunately assault) happens more often than we think. Think about your own timeline and feed...How many times do we have to hear “Me too” before we start to believe people?
It’s great to see our country moving forward. I hope that these conversations DO lead to lasting change. However, get a fucked up message from a douchebag on Tinder is a first world problem to have. And, yes, it is fucked up; but if that’s your biggest issue- you are a privileged person. Use that privilege. Don’t just screenshot and shame the guys who harass you. Recognize that this is part of a bigger problem and culture worldwide. Write your congress(wo)men. Donate your time to organizations (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape)
You can have it both ways. #Freethenipple. Breastfeed your kid in public or put pasties on your nipples and war paint on your face before you hit the streets. I don’t care HOW you do it, but PLEASE stop putting IMPORTANT life or death issues on the back burner just because they might not affect you.
That is the very definition of privilege. If all the Taylor Swift brand feminists got together and did something besides bitch about the wage gap on their stacked paychecks, women with less might be able to afford healthcare... Women in prisons might get access to tampons and pads. Little girls might not have to be cut and mutilated in the name of some old doctrine. Children might not be bought and sold into slavery. Little girls could have a childhood instead of being burdened with motherhood. Men and women both would not feel judged and would not hesitate to come forward when their partners abuse them.
Take a second when you’re tapping away on your blog to preach to the choir about the “pink tax” and ask yourself, “Is there something bigger I could be doing to help others?”. “Does this problem only effect people like me?”. You might not like the answer.
