It's not new that feminism has become "trendy." Since Lena Dunham (ugh), Taylor Swift (really?) and Amy Schumer (bleh) all labelled themselves as feminists, the past few years have shown a rise in popularity of feminist fashion. From the runways of Milan to your local Target, subtle feminist messages and t-shirts have popped up everywhere.
When I was younger, there were shirts like this from the store, Justice - Just for Girls!, where everything was leopard printed and really really neon.
Then it was shirts about girls doing things better than boys and that was surely never an issue (because, well, girls are better at things than boys). It's interesting to see how trends have changed as I've grown up. Now, I'll see shirts like this:
And think to myself, is that feminist in some way? To me, in some way, yeah, because f***boys start calling you "babe" in the first Tinder messages sent.
Last year began the rise of the phrase "Girls Bite Back" and for the longest time, I didn't understand what that meant (one section of feminism that encourages women to fight back to harassment and essentially, "bite back"). This is interesting as it truly shows the entire new world of feminism that is currently out there. For one, does this "biting back" help all women and femmes? If a woman of color were to do so, would they be hurt or injured more than a white woman? I guess if you believe that, you can buy the shirt for CAD $20.90 at Forever 21.
Another controversy of feminist fashion was during Prabal Gurung's Fall/Winter 2017 show, in which models were wearing "The Future is Female" shirts, which ... is already a shirt sold by Otherwild, with 25% of the proceeds going toward Planned Parenthood. The history behind the phrase dates back to 1972 in New York City for Labryis Books, the first women's bookstore in the city. I think that's pretty dope. Otherwild commented on Prabal Gurung's use of the slogan (there's no copyright for it), but the design itself ... was barely changed for the use of the show. If we're being smart feminists, shouldn't we have known this?
There were countless other shows for Fall/Winter 2017 that included feminist ties, like the pink pussy hats Missoni had her models wear when closing the show. Does this really send the right message (most of the people in the picture wearing the hats are white)?
A writer from MTV News even pointed out "everyone from Rihanna to A$AP Rocky has been seen wearing Dior t-shirts that says 'We Should All Be Feminists'." Which, great! But, Rocky wearing the sweatshirt while starring in a music video in which he calls women "bitches"... not so great! When is it actually feminism and when is it just a fashion statement?
Recently, Harry Styles was seen out and about in a "women are smarter" shirt, which melted my heart. The shirt costs $20 from itsasickness, portions of the proceeds go toward Planned Parenthood and the idea came from the 500+ women's marches that occurred in January.
That, is fast fashion I can get behind.
