Okay, okay, forgive me, but I have to start this thing off with a classic (and painfully dry) dictionary definition.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.”
Lately, I’ve been struggling with this definition. More specifically, I am struggling with the fact that many people don’t understand this definition. I’ve come across way too many people in my life that hold negative connotations about the word “feminism,” and I am anxiously awaiting the day that this stops. If I make a comment that has anything to do with the equality of the sexes, then I am immediately deemed a “feminazi” by some of my peers. Of course, some of these peers don’t believe in equality of the sexes at all (and that’s a whole other story), but this message isn’t to those people.
This message is to the people who say they want equality between men and women, but think that feminism is too extreme, different, and overall… negative. The funny thing is, the looks and comments I get from these type of people - they just don’t phase me. I’ll respond with a simple “So, you think males and females shouldn’t have equal rights?” and, boy, does that scare the hell out of them! This question is SO simple and straight to the point - everyone I’ve asked has replied, without hesitation, that they do in fact believe in equal rights for the sexes.
I just can’t help but get frustrated by this, and I’m sure many people can agree. To believe in equal rights of the sexes, but to make negative comments towards those who are openly feminist - well, it makes no sense to me. I am, and always will be, proud to be a feminist.
So call me a feminazi. Roll your eyes when I open my “big mouth”. It's not gonna stop me, and all of the others who are proud to be feminist.
And, for those of you who believe in equality of the sexes, but refuse to accept the obvious… let me help you out.
Okay, deep breath. I know you don’t want to hear it, but… you’re a feminist, too.
