I think the thing that bothers me most in today's society is the common misconceptions of what groups are and what they stand for. For example, the entirety of the Christian faith is apparently all extremely against anything Westboro Baptist Church openly protests. Personally, living in a Christian household, I know this to not be true as they are a group of extremists that don't speak for even a majority of the faith, much less for all of them.
The only thing that bothers me more than this is the idea that feminism might possibly be a bad thing, or that it goes too far.
Sure, there are groups of women that will proudly pronounce their feminist beliefs and go on to march shirtless in attempts to free the nipple. However, a majority of the women that support feminist beliefs aren't like that. In fact, most are just looking for equality. Whether it be in the workplace, at home or just in social environments. No, women in our society don't have it bad and I won't be one to say that we do, but we don't have it equal either. It's a given that we will never be equal in every aspect because women are very different than men in a variety of ways, but in ways that have no validity in their differences, I fully support the ideas behind feminism.
What ways might these be?
Well, as a college student that plans to soon join the billions of people worldwide in the working world, it's scary for me to see the statistics of how women in certain businesses are paid in comparison to their male counterparts. This may not always be a sexist thing, I'll give it that, and it also doesn't happen in every work environment, but to know that subconsciously someone could knowingly pay equal workers different amounts is astounding to me. They may not even have done so with sexist intentions in mind and that's what I believe should be changed.
It's that mindset we don't even realize we have that prevents us from reaching an equal level as our fellow male citizens. It isn't even just about pay because it goes further than that in the work environment alone. It's the idea that a male could get a job over a more qualified female just because somewhere in the mind of the employer hiring, they decided that a man could do better. They may have no evidence to back up this claim or any proof that the man is better, and yet still they'll hire or promote him because subconsciously it's believed men will do better at their work than women.
It's not even just about equality in the workplace though, feminism is so much more and in my mind, it doesn't even cover "freeing the nipple."
Feminism is the idea that we can one day eliminate these subconscious desires to choose a man over a woman in any situation that could theoretically be equalized. It could be in work, it could be in choosing a team for kickball, it could be doubting a female race car driver based on the idea women cannot drive.
Whatever the situation, feminism seeks equality, not in ways that are pushed to the extreme, but in situations where we shouldn't have to be asking to be treated the same as men anyways.
