A quick browse through any social media website will definitely reinforce one thing, feminism is trending. Anyone who has even the vaguest awareness of the events of the world has heard of the brave, young Malala Yousafzai and the heart-wrenching speeches of Emma Watson.
While the whole world has been keenly following their every movement and lauding their bravery, it has turned a blind eye to a plethora of other girls who are silently fighting the same battles.
In every corner of the world, there are courageous girls fighting for equal rights and freedom from discrimination.
Yas Necati and Rose Lyddon, seventeen and eighteen years old respectively, have set up a small feminist society in their college. This small society allowed them to escalate from a mere sorority to the founding members of the ‘Campaign4Consent’ organization.
The girls managed to attract the attention of a staggering fifty-two thousand signatories, but their efforts and achievements were only briefly covered by The Telegraph, a UK newspaper.
Yas Necati is a part of more than one venture; she is also involved in a campaign called ‘No More Page 3.’ She highlights the blatant sexism depicted in magazines. Necati has made several exasperated claims about the reliance on men to portray successful individuals and its tendency to illustrate women as skimpily clad objects.
Unfortunately, both these girls have not received their deserved due for all their painstaking efforts and commendable achievements. [1]
Another paragon for underscored feminists is the ‘Pink Vigilantes,’ or ‘Gulab Gang,’ from India. A group of girls that came together to take the law into their own hands and ensure that crimes against women do not go unpunished.
Twenty-five-year-old Aarti Devi is one of the youngest members of the group. She utilizes her power to bring forth the best for the community. Aarti reminds anyone who is against the ideals of feminism that empowering women is not about demeaning men; the prosperity of men and women go hand in hand.
Although they have been quite successful in rural parts of India, this group has not received any formal attention from the leading journalism giants that supposedly cover international headlines.[2]
Each one of these young girls has faced and overcome diverse situations, live in different corners of the world, use an array of means to enforce their ideas, and yet are all fighting for the same goal.
All of these women are striving for gender equality and eradication of discrimination, but the lack of support and recognition from the entire world is a hindrance in their journey to success.
While our entire focus is on a few female rights activists, hundreds of unnamed girls are doing everything in their power to bring about a change without expecting any laudation.
By providing attention to these various campaigns and endeavors, we will ensure that achieving worldwide gender equality will no longer be the agonizing struggle that it is today.
