6 Ways To Be Confident In Your Own Skin, Even If Your Skin Is Acting Up

If you are like me, you have come across acne at some point in your life.

Whether a huge zit inconveniently showed up and accompanied you to prom or you are breaking out like crazy the day your I.D. picture is supposed to be taken, we have all experienced some form of acne. Some experience those red spots and bumps more frequently and more severely than others. It is no doubt that these "red bumps" can have an extreme impact on your confidence and overall self image.

So, here are 6 of my tips on how to feel confident in your own skin, even when your skin is acting up:

1. Know when to pick up a mirror and when to put it down.

When I am going through a really bad breakout, I tend to stray away from looking at myself in a mirror. I guess I figure if my acne is out of sight, it's out of mind too. But, sometimes, taking a look in the mirror can be really empowering. Looking back at your own reflection and finding the beauty you have and embracing your flaws and imperfections is really a great way to start feeling more confident.

2. Stop comparing.

The celebrity that just posted her "#allnatural" glowing selfie probably just spent an hour perfecting her makeup and utilizing the latest photoshop app. One of the biggest mistakes that I usually find myself doing is comparing myself to others instead of appreciating what I have going for myself. It is easy to feel completely deflated after scrolling through someone else's glamorous life and comparing it to your own lifestyle, so you need to train yourself not to do it.

3. Find what you love and flaunt it

Love your hair? Then wear your favorite hairstyle. Love your lips? Then experiment with fun lipsticks or glosses. Whatever you love about yourself, do not be afraid to flaunt it. When I am struggling with my acne, I tend to do my hair a little nicer because my philosophy is that that way others will not concentrate on the battle that is currently taking place on my face.

4. Fake it 'til you make it, right?

When we act confident, whether it is genuine or totally phony, over time it becomes second nature. So don't be afraid to be bold and express yourself in ways that make you feel confident.

5. Inner beauty will always trump outer appearances

If your outer appearance is not something that you can necessarily control, then focus on what you can control like your personality and overall lifestyle. Your beauty truly shines when you are a genuine person who shows kindness to everyone. I know that I feel most confident when I emulate a positive attitude.

6. Look at the bigger picture

Your acne does not define you. You are so much more then the red bumps or scars on your skin. When you start to put all of the other aspects of your life into perspective, you will begin to realize that acne is something that is actually pretty minuscule.

Being confident is not always an easy task, especially when you have something that you are insecure about. I hope that following these tips will help you realize that acne is not the end of the world, but instead, the start of a new and more confident mindset and lifestyle.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
