God is an amazing teacher. He is someone that loves to just grow and strengthen our walk with Him. To do that He often leads us through the Holy Spirit on a spiritual journey called Fasting. Fasting is about abstaining from certain activities, mindsets, or habits that have in some way, shape, or form taken the place of God. Fasting is about reconnecting with our first love to grow closer to becoming exactly who God has called us to be. Fasting involves three things.
The first thing fasting involves is letting go of that certain activity, mindset or habit that is standing in the way of a closer relationship to God. That thing can range anywhere from television, social media, food, or even music. Letting go is often the hardest part of a fast because we have flooded our minds and hearts so much with that certain activity that there is no room for God to come in. The gift in letting go is that we get closer to God. When we let go, we invite the Holy Spirit in to mold us and shape us more into His image. Letting go is the main thing that not only allows the Holy Spirit to work, but also allows our hearts to be recalibrated towards His.
The second thing fasting involves is spending more time in prayer. I would say that prayer and fasting go hand in hand. Because prayer is our armor as stated in Ephesians 6, we began to have a new mindset. In our fast, we no longer see spending a long time in prayer as a burden but as a gift that we get to partake in. Prayer becomes something that we need and greatly desire. Prayer becomes our oxygen.
The last thing that fasting involves is deep conversation with Christ. With our eyes fixed in prayer and letting go, we become open doors to the windows of heaven. Heaven no longer is this faraway place, but it becomes closer than the very air that we breathe. Fasting gives us eyes to see the glory of God. We become filled with the things of God. We no longer focus on self. We become selfless and hopeful. Deep conversations with Christ mean that the direction of our lives now become narrow and fixed. It means that our lives matter to Him. Deep conversations open our spiritual eyes to the abundant life that Christ promised.
Fasting is a gift from God. It is a spiritual practice that enlightens our minds and pulls back the scales from our eyes. When we fast, there is no longer this sheet of what we used to fill our hearts and minds with. The sheet is torn and pulled back by the perfect love of Christ. So today sons and daughters with the leading of the Holy Spirit. If you desire to fast to get closer to Christ, do it. Fast from anything. You can fast from social media, a tv show or even music. You can even fast for how ever long that the Holy Sprit wants you to fast. It can be a day, a week or a month. However you fast do it with a heart that wants to only get closer to Christ. Lift your eyes to heaven, and taste and see that the Lord is good.
