The game we all love to hate is gone for good. Flappy Bird soared to the top of the charts as it became immensely popular for iPhone and Android users. Although it was initially released in May of 2013, the game did not see a surge in popularity until December. In January of this year, Flappy Bird became the top free iPhone app. Despite over 700,000 reviews on both devices and countless more downloads, the creator has decided to discontinue the game that so many are viciously addicted to.
The obsession begins like any other. Your friends are all talking about it, and their devotion to the game sparks your interest. You try to convince yourself that the game is not worth it; you already waste entirely too much time on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, so you definitely do NOT need yet another distraction. But you can’t get away from it. People tweet in anger about the game, funny photos related to the game pop up on The Chive – soon, you have no choice but to try it. You download Flappy Bird, and for the first time in your life, you are truly flying… then you die. You won’t let this deter you, though. Oh, no. You blow off your Accounting homework and spend the next six hours attempting to master the game. Finally, you know you have reached your full potential: a score of 47.
This mad obsession Flappy Bird players have is precisely why the creator of the game made the decision to remove it from the market. In an interview with Forbes, developer Dong Nguyen revealed that the game is “an addictive product.” He stated that it is “gone forever.”
Have no fear, though. If one has already installed the app on his phone, it will continue to work. Only the unfortunate few that did not download the game before its demise need worry. However, Flappy Bird is available for a price. Cell phones with the app installed on them have suddenly been listed on sites like eBay at upwards of $2,000. If one does not possess the funds (or insanity) necessary to spend that kind of money on an app, avid seeks of the game may try one of the new options on the market, including Splashy Fish, Flappy Flyer, Fly Birdie, and Flappy Pig.
The harsh truth is that these imposters will never live up to the legend that is Flappy Bird. No game will bring to life all of the emotions – the fear, sheer excitement, debilitating anger, and utter devastation that is Flappy Bird. With that, we say a sad, sad goodbye. Farewell, Flappy Bird.
