For several months I have been in a heated competition with some of my friends. It’s a competition that often times causes us to brag and laugh at our decisions. It’s a casual and fun competition, and it is one that has brought us closer together by taking only a few minutes of our time each week. So what is this competition? It’s called Fantasy Movie League.

Fantasy Movie League let’s you manage your own theater, without any of the mess of actually owning your own theater. Each week you have $1,000 to spend in booking movies in your theater. There are a total of 15 movies to choose from each week, and each movie has a different price tag. Your job each week is to choose any combination of movies to fill the eight screens in your theaters.

Fantasy Movie League offers both an app and a website that allows you to choose your movies for the week. The app is available for Apple and Android devices, and will allow you to pick your movies, view box office estimates, and join leagues to compete with your friends.

So how exactly does Fantasy Movie League work? Well, the profit of each movie is based off of the actual domestic box office amounts. Now, obviously a huge blockbuster movie will definitely bring in more money, but it might cost you $800 to put on one screen. That only leaves you with $200 to fill the rest of your screen. Instead of booking the huge blockbuster, you could opt to book a well promoted new animated film for only $250. You could then afford to book 3 of the animated movie, and receive 3x the boxoffice amount for that movie. Therefore, you have to weigh your options for each week in deciding which movie will bring you the most money.

It is important to note that you can choose the same movie to fill several of your screens, and that you can leave some of your screens without a movie. However, you receive a $2,000,000 penalty for each theater you leave empty without a movie. I will also point out that almost every time, theaters that earn the most money are the ones that show the same movie(s) on several screens. It may take a few trial runs for you to see how exactly Fantasy Movie League works, but once you view the perfect cineplexes for each week, it becomes a lot easier to pick your movies. Fantasy Movie League may fit in the same vein of fantasy sports, but it is definitely not as complex.
