Since news broke in August that Disney will launch its own streaming service in 2019, it has been something that many loyal Disney fans, like myself, have been looking forward to. All of our favorite shows, original movies and blockbuster movies will all be in one, convenient place. On Friday, news broke that Disney would be creating a High School Musical television show that would air on the streaming service. Since "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" premiered nine years ago there have always been rumors swirling about another movie coming out and last year a fan-made trailer even gained a lot of attention online. The latest announcement from Disney seems very definite, but for the first time in nine years, I am not looking forward to a continuation of the series.
I was 7 years old when the original movie came out and I have considered myself a huge fan of the trilogy ever since then. The premiers of the last two movies were major events for me and certain songs still find themselves on some of my Spotify playlists. At first whenever rumors would start that another movie would come out, to say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. I did not want my favorite story to end and I wanted to make sure that Troy and Gabriella would end up together since they are the original OTP.
The news that recently broke makes me upset since it has been almost 12 years since the original movie came out, and in the nine years since the final movie came out, the cast has moved on to bigger and better things. Even if the new series is set at East High and has a new generation of Troys or Gabriellas and even Sharpays, they will not be our Wildcats. While any continuation of the original cast could not be set in high school, it is still very unlikely that they would even have guest appearances on the television show. Just because something has a similar plot does not mean it can be grouped with the original movies.
When something has been left alone for almost ten years and still remains a part of its fans lives you know it is good, and you should not try to ruin a good thing by still trying to make it successful once it has essentially been retired. As most fans have accepted the fate of their favorite Wildcats, we do not want to see the franchise brought back and aimed at a generation of kids who do not care about the franchise the way that kids who grew up with it do. It was a major part of our childhood and it would hurt the original fans to see it brought back and not done justice.
Disney, I know it is one of your most successful projects of all time, but is bringing it back really worth it if there is a chance you might ruin the legacy of the originals?
