If you're not familiar with the People's Choice Awards, or the PCAs, it is an award show to acknowledge people involved in entertainment. Winners of various categories are decided through online votes from the public and fans, and this is where BTS comes in.
BTS was nominated for three awards: Group of 2019, Music Video of 2019, and Concert Tour of 2019. Once these nominations were announced, BTS fans, or ARMY, immediately put them at the top of the polls on social media by tens of millions of votes. However, BTS didn't receive any awards.
After their loss was announced, many ARMYs began to grow suspicious about the voting process for the PCAs. It was during this time where fans found something interesting in the People's Choice Awards guidelines and rules. Rather than the fans votes reigning supreme and determining the winner, NBC Universal actually makes the final decision.
Upon discovering this specification in the official rules of the PCAs, BTS fans made the conclusion that their favorite group was only nominated to gain widespread attraction and bring in views.
Feeling upset and disappointed, ARMY came together on Twitter and clapped-back at the award show by creating #BuyPERSONAoniTunes. Shortly after this hashtag was made, fans moved BTS's most recent album, "Map of the Soul: Persona," up 1,090 spots to the second place on US iTunes Top Albums chart.

In addition to charting in the United States, their album also found its way to the first and seconds spots in various countries, some being the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. With help from fans all across the world, "Map of the Soul: Persona" secured a top spot on the iTunes charts, but the clap-back doesn't end here.
While bringing BTS's most recent album to the top of the iTunes charts, fans also put all of BTS's discography on the US iTunes Top Albums chart. From their Korean albums and EPs, to their Japanese albums, to the member's individual mixtapes, BTS's name was all over iTunes.
Fans were upset by the PCAs results, but they spontaneously came together and showcased how successful BTS is by charting their entire discography.
Even if you're not a fan of BTS, you have to admit this is the most iconic way to clap-back. Rather than wasting their energy complaining about how the awards were rigged, BTS fans exerted their energy towards supporting the group's music career.
BTS will continue to succeed without the PCAs, but hopefully future award shows take notes from this event and rightfully showcase who fans crown the winner.
