After a while, family starts to mean a whole lot more and different to anyone you ask. When you hear of the word 'family,' you may think of your mom and dad, but you may also think of your best friend, a classmate, co-worker or teacher. Family doesn't just have to be those that are related by blood or even by marriage. Family is everyone and anyone that you love and care about deeply.
With family comes many good times, but also many bad times. All in all, however, family is family, and you are with them for the long run. Don't hold grudges or hate someone in your family over a stupid fight. Remember the good times you have with them. Remember the loving caring words that they have given you over and over again.
In any case, family is always a tricky thing. One we can't pick or choose. Yes, you may believe that you have a dysfunctional family or a broken family, but we are born/fostered/adopted into the family that we have. There are going to be days where you will have fights with your family and question why you are even with that family, and even worse, you could wish you were born or in a different family. There is nothing you or anyone else can do to change where you are. At the end of the day, they are you family, your blood, your support. Who else would have been there to raise you? Who else will be there when you have fallen and don't know what to do anymore? They love and care about you in any way they can. Some days it may not be shown or hard to see, but they do. Your family can show you that they love you in many ways. Some days it can be annoying, and you don't like how they are always asking, "Where are you going?" when you are 26 years old or, "Be safe and make good choices," as you are walking out the door with a friend. These acts may show as annoyance because you are old enough to know this, but they only worry and care about your safety and well-being.
All the problems, all the fighting, all the worrying and all the bickering are just nothing. Yes, in the moment they may mean something, but later on, they are really nothing. Family is family and be grateful for the family that you have. Remember the young wisdom from "Lilo and Stitch," "Ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten." Learn those words and live by then next time you are in the heat of an argument with your mom, dad, brother, sister or even your best friend. Ohana!
