Ohana Means Family

Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. -Lilo and Stitch

Ohana Means Family

“This is my family. I found it all on my own. It’s little and broken, but still good… yeah still good.” Growing up I used to watch a lot of Lilo and Stitch, and I found the movie to be extremely powerful and moving. It wasn’t until I got older that I started to get another meaning out of the movie. This movie shows the power of having a family, and family doesn’t mean birth parents and blood siblings. The word family has multiple meanings, and even the dictionary states other definitions besides “a group of persons of common ancestry”. A family is a group of people living underneath the same roof. A family is two people who love each other so much they want to spend the rest of their lives together. A family can be a group of friends who care enough about each other and will help each other out no matter what the situation. A family can be a team who works well together and shares laughs with each other. A family is where one’s heart goes.

I love my biological family with a passion, but not everyone is able to enjoy that. In the movie and television series Lilo and Stitch, Stitch never really had a family until Nani and Lilo took him in. Stitch was adopted, but nonetheless was part of a loving family. Some people are put up for adoption on day one, and others get placed in a foster home later on in their lives just like Stitch. Those people who are living in a foster house with foster parents and relatives are still part of a family. Whether they choose to love that family or not is up to them, but that family can only meet them halfway if they’re willing to meet them the rest of the way. A family is made up of love and commitment. A family has your back because they care. If a member was to go missing or was injured they’d spend the money they may or may not have to find you, to heal you, to do whatever they can to have you safe because they worry…and they worry because they care. There’s a family for everyone; you just have to know where to look and allow them into your heart

As stated earlier, a family can be made of friends. In the television series Full House, Joey Gladstone moved into a house with Danny Tanner, Danny’s brother-in-law Jessie Katsopolis, and Danny’s three girls DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle. Joey never planned to stay for long--just long enough to help out his best friend since elementary school--but over the years, Joey grew to be a part of the family and became known as Uncle Joey. Those best friends who are willing to go through situations like that no longer seem like friends to us, but part of the family. I have quite a few friends, but I can safely say that I have two best friends that mean the world to me. My one best friend and I have known each other since second grade, and I know if anything was to happen to either of us, the other will be right there helping each other through the situation we are facing. As for my other bestie, we may not have known each other as long, but we never introduce each other as “best friend.” Instead we introduce each other as “sissy” or “big sis/ little sis” because our bond is stronger than friendship, and nothing is going to break that bond. We love each other like family--isn’t that all that matters?

And what about teams or crews? It may not be a real family, but it’s good enough to be one. As an employee for Wendy’s, I don’t see myself as part of the Wendy’s crew, and others don’t either. We see ourselves as part of the Wendy’s family. We are those who have been there a year or more and just seem to have a good time while we work. As Stitch would say, “[We’re] a little broken, but still good.” Once I leave for college, I’ll grow to be a part of a new Wendy’s family, but in my heart I’ll always remember the family I was truly blessed to be a part of, and I know I will return. The same feeling can count for sports teams and groups such as choir or band.

Each family is a little broken or different, but what’s perfect in this world we live in? Besides, who needs perfect when you have love and a family that truly care?. Isn’t that all that matters? Friends may come and go, jobs will always change, but family is forever and you’ll never forget your family.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.

What's up Asshat,

I've composed a list of things that I wish upon you, and they're harsh and cruel. These things are things that I wouldn't wish upon my worst of enemies, not even that Starbuck's barista who always screws up my order, not even him. You fall into a whole other category of hate. You surpass Starbucks barista. Congratulations, I'm actually a pretty nice person, making you worthy of every single bit of torture I wish upon you. What are these things I wish upon you you might ask?
