I believe that everyone wants to be comfortable with life and content with where we are in that moment. But what if being content and comfortable was preventing us from growing into the person we were truly created to be? Would that push you out of your comfort zone? Would that push you towards the dreams you have or the goals you're trying to reach? I asked myself that same question over a year ago when I got into my car and left everything I had ever known behind to pursue a dream I've had since I was young. I was going to pursue a career in Film.
In my last article I talked about one of my favorite shows growing up, ABC's "Boy Meets World." That show taught me so many lessons in life and I can always look back to a certain episode when I'm struggling with something in life and I just remember the talks Cory and a few of the other characters had with Mr. Feeny. Whenever they were faced with a problem in life they would go to Cory's backyard and usually find Mr. Feeny already outside to give them whatever advice they needed.
*SPOILER ALERT* (If you have never seen this masterpiece of a show)
If you're not familiar with the show or have no idea who Mr. Feeny is, let me give you some insight...
Mr. Feeny was the greatest teacher I never had, some of life's most valuable lessons were taught to me by this man during a thirty minute slot on ABC. One of the most valuable lessons if not the most valuable was during the two part series finale when the concept of being in your comfort zone and not growing completely because of being there truly hit me.
In the finale Episode, Cory walks to his backyard to talk to Mr. Feeny about Topanga and himself moving to New York because she got an internship at a law firm. Scared, Cory confides in Mr. Feeny and the advice he gave Cory in that episode has stuck with me ever since. Mr. Feeny shared a story about the flower in his garden. "That flower was in a small pot in my living room, but it outgrew its surroundings, so I transplanted it here in the garden." As Mr. Feeny continues to explain about his flower to Cory, "When I pulled that flower out of the small pot in my living room, it resisted a little. It tried to hang on by its roots. I had to force it out." Cory asks him if he transplanted it outside because he thought it would do better there rather than inside the small pot.
The final episode of this incredible television show spoke to me on so many levels growing up, even watching it again right before I took a leap of faith and moved to Florida last year. I truly believe that the most incredible things in life happen when we step out of our comfort zone and take a risk. I know for me, I made a decision to take that step and pursue something I wanted in life. If I have the opportunity to look back in twenty or thirty years I can honestly say that I took a risk, whether I failed or not, I took the risk.
If I've learned one thing in my twenty-five years of life it's that we shouldn't be afraid to fail and just because we fail at something, that doesn't define us as a failure. Failing in my opinion is the beginning of learning and growing into a better you. Don't stop pushing towards a goal in life just because you have a setback, you're better than that and you were created for more than that. I don't believe that we were meant to just sit back and watch ourselves decay away.
Chase your dreams, you have them for a reason. You were created for greatness.
You Are Loved.
Your Life Has Value.
