How To Explore Saint Augustine

The weather is finally nice, the flowers are blooming, and the itch for a vacation is getting real. Living in Florida is a vacation itself, but there is still a desire to get away for a few days. Saint Augustine is a beautiful, affordable location about a half an hour south of Jacksonville- a wonderful destination for friends, families, or even a romantic getaway. There are so many different activities to see and do but here is a short itinerary to follow if you are only staying a few nights and still getting the most out of your trip.

Arrive Day 1:

Go to Castillo de Marco.

No matter if you have been to Saint Augustine or not, the fort is a must. It is almost impossible to miss such a landmark as it seems to be the focus of the city. You can either take a guided tour or walk around yourself with an informational brochure provided. It is breath taking to climb to the top and see the view of the bay. Frequently people also have picnics outside on the lawn.

Explore the shops downtown.

There are so many shops, restaurants, and bars you can walk to in the downtown area. This area could range anywhere from an hour to all day depending how thoroughly you explore. It is definitely exciting to feel the small-town feel and walk around.

Day 2:

Climb the lighthouse in the morning.

It may seam like a daunting task but the view from the top of the lighthouse is incredible and definitely worth the climb. Don't worry there are plenty of landings throughout the climb to stop and rest if needed. There is also a museum to explore on the grounds and a few walking trails. I recommend going in the morning so it's not too hot.

Take a tour at the distillery.

Anyone can take the tour even if you are not of age, which is a bonus if you're traveling with kids. Don't worry the tour is not long and boring they walk you through at a decent pace and make some pretty good jokes along the way. After the tour, if of age, there is a tasting you can participate in. They make mixed drinks of all four of their liquors and then release you to try the liquor straight if you wish.

Go on a tasting tour at San Sebastian Winery.

While you're already drinking, you might as well walk across the street to the winery. This tour is not so much an expected tour as it is you are given a cup and travel to three different stations. You taste a total of eight wines getting sweeter as the tour goes on. You can bounce from table to table at your own speed and I recommend buying some from the gift shop! They are very reasonably priced and taste great.

Head over to the chocolate factory.

Literally five steps away from the winery is Whetsone chocolate factory. They do a tour with a sample at the end for only $8 per person. They have different chocolates for every pallet and you can purchase some to take home in any of their three locations in the city.

Walk through Flagler College.

The school does offer tours if you're interested in the history and all it has to offer. However, if you just want to see the campus you can walk around yourself. The campus is fairly small but very beautiful.

Drive over to the Fountain of Youth Park.

This is a fascinating place to go especially if there are children with you. You are able to take a drink from the Fountain of Youth as well as explore the grounds, watch a blacksmith demonstration, and see a cannon fired. For adults, this park probably won't take long but I think it is worth the trip at least once.

Finish the night off with a sunset cruise.

Even though Saint Augustine is on the east coast, there is still something special about a sunset cruise. Some offer blankets on chilly nights and take you through the inter-coastal giving you history along the way. They also just turn on music at some points and let you enjoy the view.

Day 3:

Wake up early and catch a view of the sunrise.

The best place to do this of course is along the beach but anywhere along the coast would be fine. If you're not from the east cost then this is a must. Since you're already at the beach and it is finally warm out, stay a while! Look for shells, play some volleyball, get a nice tan, or enjoy the waves. The beach is a great way to end your trip.

As far as eating goes, please keep it local! Local businesses are the whole fun of traveling plus you can get some great food that you can't get at home. There is plenty more to do, this is by no means a comprehensive list! Stay longer and enjoy everything the city has to offer.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
